Along with the rapid advancement of IoT, the number of devices connected to high-speed networks have increased exponentially. While most of these devices are not equipped with sufficient security, they are easily exposed to cyber threats such as DDoS (Distributed Denial-of-Service) attacks. The advancement of new technologies also indicate that DDoS attacks are evolving and becoming more destructive than ever.
Conventional cyber-attack detection methods rely on manually collecting and comparing static variables such as known attack packet contents, attack traffic behaviors, and traffic flow rates to detect anomaly events. Though these methods may be effective for the known existing attacks, they may not be able to detect newly unknown threats, for which comparison of static variables are not applicable.
Network security vendors like Genie Networks are investing heavily in research and development of new ways to overcome new and evolved DDoS threats. These include Big Data analytic tools to quickly collect large amount of data, Machine Learning technique to automatically create a traffic behavioral model, and Artificial Intelligence technology to support and optimize security decisions. The result is a more complete and proactive solution to combat the new era of DDoS attacks.
